GENTLE (SHADOW OF THE SUN) If it wasn't for the father If it wasn't for a reason You don't know what it's like to be the one He became a ghost A whole long lifetime coming You don't know what it's like to be the one
''Gentle - Shadow of the Sun' was written for Rose Gentle and is dedicated to her son Gordon, the first British soldier to die during the 'peace' in the current Iraq conflict. Gordon, from Glasgow, was sent, aged 19, by the local Job Centre in Pollock to the recruitment office of The Royal Highland Fusiliers (no other form of employment was on offer). They trained him for 26 weeks then sent him to Iraq. Four weeks later he was dead, victim of a roadside bomb. He had been travelling in the only armoured car in his division not fitted with booby trap detection equipment. Rose has attempted to sue the British Government for failure in its duty of care. Andy met Rose in October 2004 and asked her permission to release the song. All royalties generated by it and £1 for each copy sold will go to the international Military Families Against The War campaign, in which Rose is a major voice. Andy and Doug opened a public meeting for Rose in Edinburgh during the G8 summit in 2005 with a performance of the song.
